This database can be utilized for the taxonomic assignment of fungal community members. In this study, a curated ITS database, ntF-ITS1, was constructed. However, results are often biased because of the wide variety of sequence lengths in the ITS regions and the complexity of high-throughput sequencing (HTS) technologies. Deep sequencing of Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) regions is the de facto standard for fungal diversity analysis.

The study of mycobiota remains relatively unexplored due to the lack of sufficient available reference strains and databases compared to those of bacterial microbiome studies. 5Department of Bacteriology, Graduate School of Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Okayama University, Okayama, Japan.4Division of Bio-resources, Medical Mycology Research Center, Chiba University, Chiba, Japan.3Department of Respiratory Medicine, Allergy and Rheumatic Diseases, Graduate School of Medicine, Osaka University, Suita, Japan.2Laboratory of Immune Regulation, Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Graduate School of Medicine, WPI Immunology Frontier Research Center, Osaka University, Suita, Japan.1Department of Infection Metagenomics, Genome Information Research Center, Research Institute for Microbial Diseases, Osaka University, Suita, Japan.Daisuke Motooka 1†, Kosuke Fujimoto 2,3†, Reiko Tanaka 4, Takashi Yaguchi 4, Kazuyoshi Gotoh 1,5, Yuichi Maeda 2,3, Yoki Furuta 2, Takashi Kurakawa 2, Naohisa Goto 1, Teruo Yasunaga 1, Masashi Narazaki 3, Atsushi Kumanogoh 3, Toshihiro Horii 1, Tetsuya Iida 1, Kiyoshi Takeda 2 and Shota Nakamura 1*
